We have a guy. Former military. Looks the part. He joined after your lockup. Knows how to blend in. We’ll keep you updated on progress. Still no eyes on A. You talking to him soon?

I stare out from my seat on Sloan’s back deck, watching the moon reflect off the water, casting a serene glow across the surface, lulling me into a false sense of warmth and security. Earlier in the night, Sloan showed me his new CPO quarters and the safe room at the back of the lake house. There’s going to be additional security at the lake house after the incident. It’s comforting to know, despite the threatening message left on the door by Derek. And the knowledge that, theoretically, anyone can walk through the woods to us. When the vandalism happened, Sloan’s CPO was with Addie at her summer school workshop. Sloan was vague about her whereabouts, and it made me wonder how deep his worry is because he couldn’t even speak her location out loud to me.

Shortly after my tour, he got a call from the private investigator he hired about a lead they got on the man who left the message on his front door.

We know it was Derek, but we don’t have proof.

We know, don’t we?

I try to channel my racing mind into a story, any story that doesn’t star me, and remind myself there are multiple security officers on the property with me while Sloan is away.

I take a deep breath, trying to calm my nerves. It’s been a hectic and very long day with Lucie leaving town with Ezra and Katie heading back to the city. But at least we’ll have the bookstore to manage together. My sisters will be helping remotely.

I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I think about the past. I remember when we were younger and used to spend our summers on the water. Lucie and I would always sneak away to explore the woods. It was our little secret, our escape from reality. A time when we loved each other openly.

We are one small step closer to that now that I’ve freed her from the burden of manning the bookstore here in Cherry River.

The bond between siblings is strange and heartbreaking sometimes.

I know Sloan is conflicted about taking Nathan’s next call from prison. On the one hand, he wants to find evidence of what Nathan’s doing so we can use it against him for his next parole hearing. But, on the other hand, he doesn’t want to speak to him at all.

The snap of a twig pulls me from my reverie, and I turn my attention back to the lake, gazing out into the distance. I recognize the man’s figure. Jessup, one of the security guards, waves at a red-haired man named Ollie. I met them both earlier. Jessup kind of gave me the creeps, but maybe that’s a good thing. Scary bodyguards are good, right?

When Sloan left, I heard them talking. Ollie
